Why Getting A Beauty Treatment Could Save Jobs and Your Mental Health
It is becoming increasingly important for both new customers and existing clients to start getting back to the salon, and enjoying some of the much loved (and needed) services their local beauty businesses have to offer. This is because the harsh reality is that these services simply may not be around for much longer. As a result of this potentially devastating fact, The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) are urging people to ‘Book in for Beauty’.
In times like these it is essential for the beauty industry to begin to bounce back, and a large percentage of businesses in this sector are strongly relying on bookings / appointments from both new and loyal clients in order to secure the future of these salons.
Sadly, research has shown that over 7,000 beauty salons have gone out of business since March 2020 and almost 50% of the remaining beauty business owners report that they’re unsure if their company will survive the months ahead. Additional research has also revealed that a huge 1 in 6 redundancies have already taken place in this sector, with only around 40% of businesses being able to rule out any further redundancies after the furlough scheme has ended.
Scary statistics like these just show how much the industry is relying on support from their customers in order to continue providing these essential services. So why not book a treatment to boost your self-esteem, and improve your own wellbeing – whilst at the same time you could be contributing towards keeping the staff in a job, and the salon in business!
Why do people still feel hesitant to go back for their beauty treatments?
Over the last year, everyone had been adjusting and adapting to the advice that being within close proximity to others is ‘not safe’, and we have been urged to keep our distance. This has now become the new normal, and it can sometimes be difficult to remember how things were before Covid introduced all these changes to everyday life. Many people find change difficult, and for some it might simply seem easier to continue as they are – within their new comfort zone.
However, professional opinions and extensive research has shown that by not booking a treatment, it could actually be detrimental to your mental health!
Research has shown that over 40% of the UK population are currently, or have been experiencing increased levels of worry or anxiety and this could partly result from a lack of human touch and interaction.
Although it is perfectly natural for people to have ‘off days’, if they are prolonged, this could lead to stronger feelings of depression and anxiety. Did you know, something as simple as having your hair done, having your nails painted or just putting your make up on can have a fantastic positive effect on your mental wellbeing, and give you that little self confidence boost that you’ve been craving for such a long time. What better reason to get booking those beauty treatments!
If your still unsure how you feel about returning to the salon, please be mindful that it’s completely acceptable for you to check what safety measures your chosen salon has in place. Full guidance can be found on the Government Website, or alternatively you could contact the salon before your visit to make sure you are aware of the measures they have put in place, and more importantly that you feel comfortable with them too. Yes of course people are still concerned about the safety of themselves and others, but professional salons are very well experienced with providing the highest levels of health & safety. Rest assured, not only is the salon a safe place to visit, but it will completely benefit your overall wellbeing too!
So what are you waiting for?!
At the end of the day, everyone has experienced their own struggles throughout the pandemic, some more than others. For some it has hit them hard financially while for others it is their mental health which has suffered. As we slowly start to return to normal, it is so important now more than ever to support one another! Shop local, use your local businesses and services, help others in need, look out for one another. After all, we take all these amenities and services for granted, but if things don’t start to change and we don’t start using these services again, these small businesses are not going to survive, and are going to slowly start disappearing from our highstreets.
So go on… why not treat yourself, your friend, your daughter, your partner, or anyone you know to some long overdue pampering. Feel good about yourself physically and mentally, and feel proud to know that actually, by participating in a little self-indulgence you are contributing towards the livelihoods of these struggling business owners, and ensuring they can fight to survive these uncertain times. Win Win!
